The Johnson family has been a great client of ours for many years. In fact, our children went to summer camps together, and we even went on a vacation to Yosemite with their family.
Last summer, they had been looking forward to their Saturday kayaking adventure on Puget Sound for weeks. With the weather forecast promising clear skies and calm waters, they had planned to paddle along the scenic coastline, taking in views of Mount Rainier and perhaps spotting some marine life. Their gear was packed, snacks prepared, and excitement filled the air as they envisioned a perfect day on the water. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when an unwelcome household emergency disrupted their morning.
They told us that when they were gathered in the kitchen for breakfast, Mrs. Johnson noticed a puddle of water forming near the utility closet. Upon investigation, they discovered their electric water heater was leaking heavily at the bottom. Their 12 year old water had sprung a serious leak! Water was quickly pooling on the floor. In a panic, they immediately shut off the water supply, but it was clear that their kayaking plans would have to wait.
They knew it was serious. They needed to clean up the water and get an emergency plumber to come out asap.
After a few frantic phone calls, they found a local plumber who specialized in water heater replacement and could come out that same day. The plumber explained that leaks like this often occur when water heaters age or corrode internally. In this case, sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank had likely worn through the lining, causing the leak. Since their unit was over 12 years old—past its typical lifespan—repair wasn’t an option. They had to replace it.
By noon, the plumber arrived with a new energy-efficient electric water heater. After draining and removing the old unit, he installed the replacement and ensured all connections were secure. He also took time to explain how regular maintenance could prevent future issues and improve efficiency. The Johnsons were relieved that their hot water was restored by mid-afternoon.
Although their kayaking trip had been derailed, Mrs. Johnson suggested they make the best of what remained of the day. The family decided to take a walk along Alki Beach instead, enjoying views of Puget Sound from shore while planning another paddling trip for the following weekend.
The experience served as a reminder of how quickly unexpected emergencies can disrupt even the best-laid plans—and how important it is to maintain essential household systems like water heaters. While their day didn’t go as planned, the Johnsons were grateful that the plumber was able to replace the water heater on such short notice.
